Icon Sophie Monk Tells Us Why Beauty & The Geek Doesn’t Need A Villain Storyline To Be Fun

There’s abject chaos going down in the world right now so it’s safe to say we could all do with a bit of escapism, enter Beauty and The Geek Australia, which premieres tonight and right in the nick of time.

Ahead of the brand spanking new season, I jumped on a Zoom call with national treasure Sophie Monk to suss out what we can expect from the new crop of Geeks and Beauties and it sounds like we’re in for an absolute treat!

Hi Sophie Monk! First up, what can we expect from the new season of Beauty and the Geek?

Oh, what can’t you expect!? It will blow your mind! It will be your favourite TV show. [While it was being filmed] I was thinking, ‘How are they gonna cut this down?’ The entertainment is just endless, just watching opposites, their two worlds collide is hilarious on its own.

You’re not laughing at anyone, you’re just laughing at the different walks of life. There’s just so much comedy, and then the next minute you’re in tears because the emotion’s there. It’s not like old school where the Beauties are given maths questions or [the show is] trying to throw them under the bus, it’s just got so much heart.

I love that! Tell us a bit about the Geeks, what are they like this year?

They’re gonna be hard to top. It is the best cast! The innocence of them, because I don’t think they’ve been exposed to different social circles, a lot of them sit in their room and play computer games, so they wear their heart on their sleeve.

A lot of them have said it’s the best thing they’ve ever done in their life, it’s just so gorgeous.

And what about the Beauties, what are they like?

They’re adorable! You’re not gonna not like anyone, they don’t have to play the persona of being ditzy as much. You watch them grow as well.

That’s what I love about Beauty and the Geek, it’s not like The Bachelor or MAFS where there needs to be a villain, everyone’s so loveable here! It’s so fun and light and fresh.

That’s it! It’s a very different type of reality show. You don’t need any of that. It’s so entertaining! Because I think everybody loves drama and a villain and someone not to like, it’s human nature. But with this, you don’t need it.

There’s been some criticism about how Beauty and the Geek promotes stereotypes, what are your thoughts on that?

Well it doesn’t! Because, for me, these guys are saying that they’re geeks. Their lifestyle is very much that they like to sit in their bedrooms, study, play computer games and don’t like socialising. A lot of them have never gone on a date or had their first kiss, so I don’t know if it’s stereotypes because you’ve gotta call it Beauty and the Geek, but there’s a lot of Geek in the Beauties as well.

Absolutely! Thank so much for chatting with me, Sophie. Can’t wait to tune in!

Thanks so much sweetheart!

Beauty and the Geek premieres tonight at 7pm on Nine.
