Hamilton Is Coming Back To Sydney For An Encore Season & Don’t Throw Away Your Shot

hamilton returns to sydney

Iconic musical Hamilton is returning to Sydney for a huge encore tour, which is the perfect opportunity if previously you missed out on being in the room where it happens.

The award-winning musical (we’re talking Tony, Grammy, Olivier, Pulitzer Prize) will be opening at the Sydney Lyric Theatre from July 30, 2024 for the first time since 2021.

Last time it was here, more than 100 performances of the Sydney shows had to be cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, so don’t throw away your shot to finally see it in person instead of watching the online version on repeat.

And honestly, it makes sense given the Lin-Manuel Miranda renaissance. That man cannot be escaped, I fear.

In case you somehow aren’t across Hamilton (which would be an impressive feat on its own), the musical is a (somewhat ahistorical) retelling of the American revolution, narrowing in on founding father Alexander Hamilton and his friends, lovers and rivals.

However, what makes this musical so iconic is not just its incredible soundtrack (which I can recite every word to despite the fact that I haven’t listened to it in ages), but its genre-bending decision to a) fuse Hip Hop and RnB with the classic Broadway show tune sound, and b) cast all its leads as people of colour, even though the characters they are depicting are white.

The flipped racial casting is designed to represent what the average American looks like, and a cool little tidbit about the Aussie show is that it did this too in its own way, by casting a diverse mix of Aussie and Kiwi stars.

The full cast for this iteration of Hamilton is yet to be revealed, but I’m sure it’ll be incredible.

If you want to nab tickets to the 2024 season, pre-sale opens on Monday 27 November.
