The New South Wales capital has secured the coveted Australian premiere of the critically and commercially adored production that shot creator Lin-Manuel Miranda into the stratosphere and quickly became the hottest ticket on Broadway, with Sydney winning a reportedly heated bidding war that also involved Melbourne and Brisbane.

Hamilton will receive its Australian premiere at the Lyric Theatre in March, 2021, with local casting set to begin in June this year.

The Australian production will be helmed by the musical’s original producer Jeffrey Seller in conjunction with local producer Michael Cassel, who is also behind the current Melbourne run of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

In a statement posted a short time ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda expressed excitement at the play’s bold new journey, stating “Thank you to everyone in Australia who’s been asking for Hamilton. It’s on its way and we can’t wait.

Hamilton originally premiered on Broadway in 2015 and quickly became a critical darling. Its original run scooped 11 Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. Since opening in New York, the production has taken on engagements in Chicago, San Francisco, West End in London, and Puerto Rico. A German-language adaptation is scheduled to open next year in Hamburg, before it arrives on Australian shores in 2021.

No ticket on-sale dates are available at this time, however fans can sign up for a mailing list at the production’s Australian website.

It’s happening, mates. It’s finally happening.
