His Dark Materials

After Sunday – well, Monday for us, HBO will have a gaping hole in their ratings as Game of Thrones comes to an end. As a result, they’re gearing up for a bunch of a new projects like the fantasy-series adaptation of Philip Pullman‘s award-winning trilogy, His Dark Materials.

The first season will introduce us to the seemingly ordinary but brave gal Lyra. While searching for a kidnapped friend, Lyra stumbles upon a sinister plot involving stolen children, and sets out to understand the mysterious phenomenon called Dust. On her quest, she meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings like badass polar bears and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living – and the dead – in their hands.

His Dark Materials stars Dafne Keen (Logan) as Lyra, the brilliant Ruth Wilson (Luther) as Marisa Coulter, Clarke Peters (The Wire) as Dr. Carne , the one and only Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as Lee Scoresby, and James McAvoy (a whole bunch of films) as Lord Asriel.

The King’s Speech Tom Hooper has directed the first two episodes and Jack Throne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) has penned the show.

If you dare to cast your minds back to the 2007 film adaptation, Asriel was played by James Bond actor Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman starred as Marissa Coulter. Good times.

HBO has yet to unleash an official release date but we’ll keep you updated.

As Pullman tweeted earlier today: “Looking very good, I think.”

Earlier this week, the author was knighted Sir Philip Pullman for his services to literature. He received the honour from Prince Charles. Tennis player and quality bloke Andy Murray also copped his knighthood at Buckingham Palace for his services to tennis and charity.
