A Motherfreaking Rooftop Sold For Over $1Million In Melbourne’s Collingwood

At the moment, home ownership for the average young Australian exists as kind of the mythical, wildly unreal urban legend you’d look up on Snopes to prove your crackpot theory-spouting mate wrong.

And if you need any further proof of the fact that “owning a home” is only really feasible if you consider a tent a home, you need look no further than this.
A building’s rooftop in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Collingwood just sold out-of-auction, with a reported price tag in excess of $1million.
Over one million Australian dollars. For a rooftop.
The space (the green area in the photo above) clocks in at a tidy 220 square metres, and sits atop the old Foy & Gibson factory, which has been converted into warehouse-style apartments.
The property, which is essentially a very small block of land 5 storeys in the air, was due to go to auction tomorrow, and had reportedly attracted attention from several very keen buyers. But the sale was instead settled prior to the auction, with the buyer being an owner-occupier of the property.
Now, you might think that over a million for a kinda nothing rooftop with not a lot on it in a former-industrial area of Collingwood is a bit steep. A little outrageous. A bit rich for anyone’s taste.
But here comes the kickers. And there are a few.
The rooftop already has planning approval for a double-storey penthouse apartment to be built up there. It’s located in one of the most sought-after residential development areas in Melbourne’s inner north.
And it’s only got a tiny little view of the CBD.
Oh. Nothing spectacular at all, really. Definitely not worth shitting your pants over. *WEEEEEEPssSSSsS*
Agents handling the property estimate that, once the house on the roof is built, the property will easily be one of the best in the suburb, and will command a price-tag well in excess of $2million.
Lets all have a real hard think about that while we’re searching the couch for goon change this weekend, yeah?
