Car Hits Pedestrians As Brawl Erupts In Melbourne Suburb Of Collingwood

Police are investigating the circumstances around an incident in the inner Melbourne suburb of Collingwood this morning, in which a driver hit a group of pedestrians after a brawl erupted outside a licensed premises.

Senior Constable Melissa Seach says that at around 2.45 this morning, a group up to 200 people were leaving an event at a nightclub venue on Smith Street, near Mater Street, when a fight broke out between a number of them.

Six people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries as a result of the fight, however, police are also investigating that circumstances in which a vehicle careened into the crowd before hitting a parked car.

One man received serious leg injuries after being hit by the car, and was taken to hospital. Police have not yet commented on how or whether the incidents are connected.

As of earlier today, investigators had blocked off Smith Street, Collingwood, in both directions between Alexander Parade and Hotham Streets.

It remains unclear how long the street will be closed, but officers remain on the scene and have requested that people avoid the area if possible.
