Lizzo’s Joyful ‘Sister Act 2’-Inspired Performance At The MTV Awards Is All You Need Today

Lizzo Sister Act 2

If there’s two things I love in this world, it’s sass queen Lizzo and the classic 1993 film Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit. I strongly believe the latter is the greatest sequel of all time, so when Lizzo decided to pay tribute to it during her very first awards show performance, I just wanted to give her every trophy and medal I could find.

At this week’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, which were held on June 15 (US time) and televised two days later, Lizzo made sure her big moment was memorable, using her performance of huge tune “Juice” to pay tribute to a legendary movie (fitting when you remember it’s a TV and movie awards night).

Remember the climactic final performance of “Joyful, Joyful” from the St Francis Academy gospel choir at the All-State Choir Championship, taking them to a shock victory? Here it is in case you are some kind of heathen who hasn’t seen this movie 60 times:

Well, Lizzo basically did that, again.

The song opens with Lizzo doing her best Lauryn Hill impression in a purple robe, looking as nervous as Rita Louise Watson singing in front of her disapproving mother. Then her dancers come in looking like 90s high schoolers, with outfits and dance moves taken straight from the iconic film.

There’s even a bit where we hear a voiceover saying “Lizzo says take off your robes” — aka a direct reference to the bit in the movie where the backstage lady says “Your teacher says take off your robes”, meaning that the kids are free to express who they are. Sob!

Lizzo even has an interlude where she runs through scales, like “la la la LA la la”. Again, it’s a very obvious nod to the movie and on an unrelated note, I am crying.

Watch the entire glorious performance below and praise our lord Lizzo:
