Ariana Grande, my queen, has apparently turned down the opportunity to be called ‘Dame Ariana Grande’, according to The Sun.

Yep, Grande was offered the high distinction (more than a lousy OBE baby!) on this year’s New Year’s Honours list – alongside people like Michael Palin and Twiggy – for her work fundraising for victims of the horrific Manchester Arena bombing at her Dangerous Woman concert in May last year. But she decided to pass up the title, reportedly to pay respect to the victims of the attack.
Grande visited victims of the bombing, which left 22 dead, before organising the One Love Manchester charity gig, featuring acts like Miley Cyrus, Coldplay and One Direction‘s Niall Horan.
She became an honorary Mancunian in June 2017. And in May this year got a worker bee tattoo, a symbol of the industrial city.
Here’s what a source told the British tabloid:
Ariana was flattered but said it was too soon. She explained she was still grieving. So were scores of families. She feared some affected might see it as insensitive. The committee wrote to her but she politely said no.
Then they backed that source up with another insider, someone close to Grande: “She was deeply moved and honoured. She didn’t decline it as such but explained it was not the right time to accept.”
Which to me implies that Grande could become a dame in a year, five years, ten. One day it will be the right time for Grande’s long pony to come perilously close to being chopped off by an honorific sword.
If she had taken the honour, 25-year-old Grande would’ve become the youngest woman to cop the accolade, after then-28-year-old sailor Ellen MacArthur.
Still it’s worth noting she couldn’t have become a Dame-dame. Because she’s American, she could have only been bestowed with the title Dame Commander of the British Empire.
