Add ‘Conquer Australia’s Best Mazes’ To Your Weekend Bucket List

Have you watched The Shining recently? Nope? Good. Don’t.
Because we’ve got a novel heave-your-arse-out-of-bed-and-get-ready-for-the-summer idea that involves mazes and a good time.
Sure, you’ll lose yourself a few times in here, but making sure you go to the bathroom before you start is half the battle won already.
Just steer clear of glowing glassware and dudes named Cedric and you’re all good.
LIVING LATTICE LABYRINTH @ A MAZE ‘N’ PLACE
149 Wardell Rd, Alstonville NSW
No dead ends means no back tracking, you’ll just be walking around for hours. Ex-mechanics technician, locksmith, car tinkerer & racer, and puzzle enthusiast Rik Dillon made mock mazes and did trial tests to ensure his final creation defied your simple-minded logic. The maze even has lockable gates to keep regular visitors on their toes. Your memory won’t help you now, sucker.
BELLINGHAM MAZE
247 Old Bruce Hwy, Tanawha QLD
F’Yeah, a star-shaped maze. Novelty value = . The tower at the centre of this green, celestial situation provides a vantage point from which to plan your way out, and they even give you a Harry Potter quiz to complete while you wander.
BAGO VINEYARDS & MAZE
Milligans Road off Bago Road, Wauchope NSW
Wandering the largest maze in NSW under the influence sounds better than it should. The combo of vino, sun, and trying to navigate our way through a two kilometre passage sounds like the kind of sadistic thing we’d be game for after a few, too.
A MAZE’N THINGS
1805 Phillip Island Rd, Cowes VIC
This wooden maze takes about 45 minutes to complete. Dead ends will wear on your nerves, but there are emergency exits for mazerunners who decide to RQ.
TASMAZIA AND THE VILLAGE OF THE LOWER CRACKPOT
500 Staverton Road, Promised Land TAS
The brain behind Tasmazia prefers to go by “The Brian, Laird of the Lower Crackpot, Chieftain of Clan Crackpot, Chief Magistrate & Sheriff of the Lower Crackpot”. His wife is “Lady Crackpot” and together they created this miniature village on the promised land that was their dairy farm, with eight life-size mazes for you to explore. Only took ’em 20 years.
WANDILIGONG MAZE
White Star Rd, Wandiligong VIC
The largest living hedge maze in the country is a bitch to prune and gets a bit muddy after it rains. Still, it’s where you bring your “person” because this place is romantic AF. It’s surrounded by cottage garden with blushing heritage roses, and the maze is two kilometres of places to pash; the nearby Wandiligong cafe also makes giant slabs of cake and milkshakes to share.
GIANT HEDGE MAZE @ A MAZE N MARGARET RIVER
9978 Bussell Hwy, Margaret River WA
Re-opening in September, the towering three metre high Giant Hedge Maze has been putting people through their paces and making them walk unnecessarily long lengths for over 20 years. Done with the big one? ‘Grats. There are now five other mazes on-site for you to navigate. The long walk continues.
