Pokémon X & Y Sales Break Australian Records

Great job, Australian nerds! You’ve helped conquer the unthinkable, beating the Australian sales record of Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda and Pokémon Black and White by buying up big on the highly anticipated, froth-worthy video gaming beacon of super kawaii and super frightening pocket monsters, Pokémon X and Y.

The sales numbers, as the Nintendo press release put it, mega evolved.

The news confirms that Aussies are incurably enamoured with the franchise, with the sales data being released of the games’ opening weekend, revealing that 100,000 units of the game were sold and given over to trembling, nostalgia-driven fans. By way of comparison, Nintendo’s previous Pokémon release, Pokémon Black and White, sold 80,000 on its opening weekend. But by further way of far more humbling comparison, this year’s biggest gaming release GTA V smashed records everywhere, and would have surely far surpassed Pokémon’s 100 k sales rate. But you know. Nintendo – kewt.

Personally, it seems like Nintendo and the Pokémon creators should perhaps be praised for their marketing genius in releasing two versions of what essentially is the same game, capitalising on those who will no doubt give in to obsession and crippling FOMO by buying both games, effectively doubling their sales. That, or they should be congratulating themselves on creating an undeniably fucking awesome game, featuring blissful interludes such as this:
