Nintendo Unveils Two Huge Pokémon Games For The Switch, ‘Sword’ And ‘Shield’

Nintendo has announced its brand new Pokémon RPG for the Switch, folks, and like most of the previous franchise titles, this one comes in two: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

Set in the brand new Galar region, Sword and Shield are set to be the prettiest looking games in the series so far, opting for cell shaded graphics similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. By the sounds of it, all the standard Pokémon fare is there: big gym battles, varied cities and locations, classic RPG elements, etc.

The trailer also announced three new starter Pokémon – the chimp-like Grookey, fiery rabbit Pokémon, Scorbunny, and shy water bloke, Sobble. Suss out the trailer for yourself below.

The Galar region contains “idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forests, and craggy, snow-covered mountains,” game director, Shigeru Ohmori, said during the Nintendo Direct. A bunch of fans are convinced that the quaint cottages and brick buildings of the game are actually inspired by real ones in the UK, which has already lead to a bunch of new nicknames on Twitter, including Pokémon Greggs and Pokémon Nandos.

There’s no solid release date for Pokémon Sword and Shield yet, but you can expect it to drop later this year. I’d wager we’ll hear more in June when E3 rolls around, so keep an ear out around then.

The Pokémans. They are coming.
