In an industry which covets name recognition (Agyness Deyn was born Laura Hollins don’t you know?) it’s refreshing to see Melissa Johannsen embrace the initials she shares with Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Mick Jagger, Marc Jacobs and Milla Jovovich. Better known as MJ, the Alice Springs model was first scouted in an Adelaide shopping mall when she was fifteen but has continued to make a name for herself with a successful New York Fashion Week haul bolstered by turns at Band of Outsiders, Charlotte Ronson, Rodarte and Jeremy Scott. Between all the craziness we caught up with MJ to discuss her favourite shows and labels, travel tips and befriending fellow models.
What show has been your highlight so far? My favorite show was definitely Rodarte! It was my third season in this show and this time it was extra special because the inspiration for their collection was the Australian outback, which is my backyard!
What keeps you sane during all the shows? My family. My Mum is traveling with me again this season and also my brother Jordon and sisters Jess and Georgia came to New York with us. It was so awesome to have them there they are great support through all the craziness!
Do you still get nervous before you walk, any rituals to guide you through? I don’t really feel nervous anymore at shows, I don’t have time to even think about it with all the craziness backstage. Though I do have to make sure my shoes are strapped to my feet as well as I can!
Which models are you tight with? I am friends with a lot of the Aussie girls we seem to gravitate towards each other and have so much fun together! Dempsey Stewart is with my NY Agency Wilhelmina, I always love bumping into Rose Smith, Jade Jackson and Victoria Lee they have been doing this for a bit longer than I and they are always so friendly and encouraging and lovely to talk to. Another lovely girl I have become friends with is Saara Silhoven from Finland she is hilarious and we have a great time together.
Essential travel tips? I always make sure I have plenty of vitamins with me, I drink lots of water especially on the plane and try and pack as light as I can because over fashion week I receive quite a bit of trade from shows.
Which collection did you want to take home with you? I loved the collection from Band of Outsiders this season. Their clothes are super wearable and very much my style and of course Rodarte! Who wouldn’t want to take that collection home?
