Codie Young’s NYFW Wrap Up

Third time’s a charm for Sunshine Coast teen Codie Young (pictured, left). It’s the midpoint of her third international runway season and the nineteen year old has logged 18 shows at New York Fashion Week, including coveted spots at Charlotte Ronson (for which she opened and closed), Band of Outsiders, Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc, Oscar De La Renta, Rodarte, L’wren Scott and Cynthia Rowley, and seven more at London Fashion Week where she graced Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Giles and Paul Smith. With Milan and Paris to go (where she’s previously nabbed Chanel, Chloe and Lanvin among others) Pedestrian caught up with Young to discuss pre-show jitters, travel tips and her favourite collection thus far.

What show has been your highlight so far? I always get asked the question “what has your favorite show been” and it’s always hard to pick just one! So I will give you a few of my favorites. Obviously I loved Marc Jacobs he always has incredible shows! This season I especially loved, as I’m a massive Alice in Wonderland fan so I thought that the hats we all wore were just outstanding. Marchesa was also such a beautiful show and my dress was just breathtaking as was the dress I wore in Giles. Also Rodarte is always a pleasure to be chosen for. Laura and Kate Mulleavy are such nice people and their clothes I feel are really beautiful plus the theme this year was the Australian outback!

What keeps you sane during all the shows? To be honest it’s pretty impossible to keep sane during the fashion circuit as it’s seriously just full on. Texting and talking to the family helps as well and my other model friends as we are all going through the same thing and it’s hard for those outside the industry to understand just how hard fashion month is.

Do you still get nervous before you walk? Yes I definitely still get nervous. But I don’t get nervous at every show now. It’s just the ones where I have a really hard dress to walk in or the shoes are too big or the floor’s slippery that type of thing. In stressful situations like shoes not fitting there isn’t a lot you can do you just need to suck it up and make it work.

Which models are you tight with? I’m really close with Jess (Clarke) and Emily (Baker) we started together and just clicked and lived together for most of last year. But I’m also good friends with most of the Aussie models. But really you become friends with all the models – you see them nearly everyday here and there.

Essential travel tips? Definitely vitamins, all the flying can make you a bit sick as you’re sharing the plane with a lot of people. Always have a book with you! For me I also always have a sketch book but that probably won’t apply to everyone. iPod. Always make sure you take some sort of big jumper or coat on a plane, you never know, your suitcase could get misplaced. It also depends where you’re going as I live in my suitcase I always have summer and winter clothes.

Which collection did you want to take home with you? I couldn’t pick one, depends on my mood. Rodarte clothes are always beautiful and I wear a lot of their stuff! Their collection was beautiful this season. Giles was also beautiful, not very practical for everyday wear but for a big event it would be nice to have that whole collection to pick from.
