Yeesh, this doesn’t sound good.
Just weeks after being acquitted of murder and manslaughter, Gable Tostee has reportedly signed a six-figure deal to tell 60 Minutes about the night Warriena Wright fatally fell from his Gold Coast apartment’s balcony.
Considering the fact he’s already told the story via a bodybuilding forum, that’s not a bad payday. It might go some way towards repairing financial damage caused by the two year trial – but it doesn’t seem likely to help his public image when the episode airs on November 13.
Tostee’s lawyer successfully argued that his client wasn’t responsible for Wright climbing over his balcony, but he’s remained an lightning rod for concerns about male chauvinism and violence against women.
Even after being found innocent, profiting off a woman’s death isn’t really the kind of thing that would make you think “gee, what a great guy”.
The internet, as you’d expect, has blown up at the news:
Gable Tostee receiving a six-figure sum for a tell all interview is everything that’s wrong with Australian media.

So he wouldn’t take the stand in court but will tell his story for money? ????#Tostee agrees to tell-all interview https://t.co/7SdFhFxXMQ

@60Mins Wow, paying Tostee for an interview? Are you going to pay her family big bucks to discuss their loss??— Toitoi the cat (@Toitoi_cat) November 5, 2016
So, uh, yeah. It might take a couple more record breaking milkshake throwdowns to get that life back on track.
