Instagram has finally heard our prayers and will be adding a pronouns feature to the app. I am in love with this news.
The feature was introduced today, and if you have an updated version of Insta, you should be able to pop in your pronouns right now under ‘Edit Profile’. Users will be allowed to tap in their pronouns (up to 4), and it’s just so good to see something like this coming to the app.
“As of today, you can add your pronouns to your bio as an Instagram function. You might be asking ‘well, I’m not transgender, why do I have to add my pronouns to my bio?’ Here’s why,” said trans athlete Schuyler Bailar in Instagram’s post for the new feature.
“Gender expression – how we look, how we act, the clothes that we wear – does not always equal gender identity, and sharing your pronouns helps dismantle this norm that people think gender identity always equals gender expression. It also creates a safe space for trans and gender non-conforming folks to share our pronouns too.”

“It is so important to me that when people come to my page they know my pronouns right off the bat,” said trans and genderqueer actor Ellie Desautels.
“To have Instagram make this feature to include pronouns in bio makes me as a trans actor on Instagram feel included and important. Everybody has pronouns. This is going to be great for everybody.”
The best part about the feature is that you can decide whether or not everyone can see your pronouns or just your followers. They can also be changed at any time, and it’s just really nice to see Instagram nail something that means so much to the queer community.
