Up To 60 Homes Destroyed As Fires Continue In Victoria

Rain provided some relief but bushfires were still raging Victoria this morning, with 53 homes confirmed lost and more in doubt in Wye River and Separation Creek overnight.

The Great Ocean Road remains closed from Torquay to Skenes Creek, and the thousands of holidaymakers and festival goers who usually head for Lorne and its surrounds from Boxing Day each year are being urged to stay away while emergency services try to get the situation under control and assess the damage.

Victoria Police Assistant Commission Debra Abbott told ABC radio urged residents and vacationers to remain calm as police and emergency services worked to continue evacuating those towns in danger throughout the night.

“We ask for people to be patient and to follow the directions given by emergency service workers.”
Emergency shelters and relief centres have been established in Torquay and Apollo Bay, with community meetings planned today at both sites.

Organisers of the sold out Falls Music and Arts Festival, due to begin on December 28 in the hills above Lorne, released a statement on their website advising that the festival site is “safe from the path of the fires”, but that final decisions as to the festival going ahead would be made after midday today.

While major property losses were not expected in Lorne, the entire town has been evacuated as a precautionary measure nonetheless.
Ticket holders should check the Falls Facebook page for updates throughout the weekend.
We send a big  shout out to all the firefighters, emergency workers and volunteers working to get the situation under control.
