Great Ocean Road To Reopen After Devastating Xmas Day Fires In Lorne

Victoria‘s Great Ocean Road will be open to tourists and the public tomorrow, after closing since the Christmas Day fires in Lorne and surrounding areas.

Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said that the reopening is due to the critical need for businesses along the stretch to be back up and running, since it is peak tourism season.
There will be reduced speed limits and no stopping zones, from Cumberland River to the Wye River Bridge.
“Visitors are welcome and encouraged to return to these areas.

But please respect the privacy of residents and visitors who have been affected by the fire. This includes not taking photographs of fire-affected residential areas.”
The fire that destroyed 116 homes is still burning, but is now located in deep-seated forest, rather than on the coast. More than 300 firefighters are still working to put out the blaze.
