The stakes surrounding the release of The Interview have escalated further, with reports of an anonymous online group threatening attacks and retribution on cinemas that show the movie.
According to a report in
Variety, a message from the so-called ‘Guardians Of Peace’ group has been released, reading:
Warning
We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places ‘The Interview’ be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.
Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
All the world will denounce the SONY.
The film, which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as American journalists on a mission to assassinate Kim Jong-Un, has already caused a series of moderate to severe shitfights, including threats from North Korea.
At the start of all this, the noise surrounding The Interview seemed like a dumb PR stunt, but it’s highly unlikely the people behind the film would escalate things as far as this.
Today’s threats have the whiff of North Korea’s particular brand of crazy (“All the world will denounce the SONY”), although realistically, it could just as easily be some random internet dickheads trying to stir up trouble.
Per a report by
ABC News America, experts have downplayed the threats as a “mind game” against Sony.
Richard Clarke, a former counter-terrorism advisor to the White House, poured cold water on them, saying:
“North Korea has little or no capability to do any physical attacks, commando activity, or terrorism in the U.S. By saying it’s coming, however, they hope to keep people from the theaters and, thereby, hurt Sony’s revenue.”
