‘The Castle’ House Is Relying On A Heritage Listing To Avoid Demolition

IT’S THE CONSTITUTION. IT’S MABO. IT’S JUSTICE. IT’S LAW. IT’S THE VIBE. AND…
Uh…
No, that’s it. It’s the vibe.
A man’s home is his goddamned castle, as hero of the common man Darryl Kerrigan once taught us. But unfortunately, someone with a vested financial interest is keen on turning one man’s castle into many people’s low cost/high density housing.
The house made famous by the quintessential Aussie flick ‘The Castle‘ has long been the subject of demolition rumours, with the current owner of the property very keen to tear it all down to make way for two townhouses.
But the famous shed at 3 Highview Crescent, Coolaroo (which is really 3 Dagonet Street, Strathmore) might have its fate decided in court once again, in a case of life imitating art.
A number of members of the Moonee Valley City Council are against the demolition proposal, and are actively pushing to save the building due to its cultural significance. As early as Tuesday, the council will vote on whether to formally apply for a Heritage Listing on the property, which would prevent any proposed demolition work.
But the owners of the property have vowed to take legal action should the council apply for a heritage listing, meaning the house would once again be subject to a court battle in order to save the decorative lattice, which (although fake) adds a bit of charm.
Members of the council opposed to demolition requested a report into the house’s significance, which found that it had “connections with the film The Castle [which] are the foremost aspect of its significance, reflecting both social and historical value.”

Somebody, for the love of bloody God anybody, get Dennis Denuto on the blower QUICK.
