Some Very Confident Punter Just Put $1 Million On Labor Winning The Election

Few among us have seen a wildly improbable multi they didn’t gleefully slap $5 down on while five beers deep at Friday knock-offs, but this takes confident punting to a whole new level. A man in New South Wales is apparently so utterly convinced that Labor will win the forthcoming Federal Election that he’s put down a bet to the tune of $1 million.

Y’know, just a bit of spare change and whatnot.

The NSW man outlaid the giant bet this afternoon, after a day in which Labor leader Bill Shorten fought back tears while defending his late Mum, who inexplicably became the subject of a wildly ill-conceived Daily Telegraph hit piece this morning.

At odds of $1.23, the man stands to win $230,000 should Labor emerge victorious after the May 18 election. The bet was so large, in fact, that betting agency Ladbrokes tightened Labor’s odds down to $1.20 immediately after the bet was made.

More to that, it’s also the single largest bet ever placed with Ladbrokes, eclipsing the previous mark by almost triple. Prior to today, the largest bet ever placed via Ladbrokes was a $370,000 bet placed earlier this year on that horse everyone seems to love, Winx.

It was also just the second bet placed by the man with Ladbrokes, and reportedly caught officials at the betting company by surprise. Though it should be noted the unidentified man was said to have been considering the bet for quite some time.

For what it’s worth, Ladbrokes currently lists the Coalition’s odds of returning Government at the election at $4.50. Which is ahhh… pretty long for what’s essentially a two-horse race.

Genius move? Or quick way to lose a ball-achingly large amount of dosh? Only time will tell.
