Bill Shorten To Run For Labor Leadership

Bill Shorten, former Minister for Education and Minister for Workplace Relations, has formally announced at a press conference in Melbourne today that he will nominate himself for the leadership of the Labor party. Shorten‘s announcement confirms rumours that had swirled throughout Canberra since Kevin Rudd announced he was stepping down after Labor’s federal election loss on Saturday.

“Today I am announcing that I will be putting my name forward to be the leader of the Australian Labor Party,” Shorten said. “I want to lead the rebuilding offer movement, and take the fight up to the coalition in Australian politics. I am running because I believe Labor can win the next election”

Shorten is so far the only person to put himself forward as Kevin Rudd‘s replacement for the leadership position. Former Deputy Prime Minister Anthony “Albo” Albanese is yet to give a solid answer on whether or not he has leadership aspirations. Former Health Minister Tanya Plibersek has reportedly ruled herself out for leadership, but would consider nominating herself for the deputy position, which she would be likely to obtain if Shorten became leader.
