New South Wales Is Pretty Damn Rooted After Last Night’s Mega Storm

The monster storm that hit New South Wales last night looks just about done, but the nightmare ain’t quite over – not only has the storm moved down the coast to Victoria and Tasmania, but NSW roads are still flooded, public transport is stuffed, and emergency services are dealing with the damage.
The SES had 9000 calls for assistance overnight, of which about 3000 haven’t yet been attended.
It’s reported that high winds knocked trees and powerlines into properties across the state, and many coastal areas have suffered severe damage from waves. On the Northern Beaches, for example, swells of up to eight metres were reported, which is astoundingly large.
Many reports from Coogee Beach are similar – the rock wall took a battering, and concerns were raised about the surf lifesaving club, which was hit with large swells.

There’s also obviously the huge damage caused by trees being ripped outta the ground by the powerful winds and deluge of rain:

Public transport is not going so well too – flooding and fallen trees has knocked out portions of the Sydney Trains network, which is slowly recovering. Ferries are mostly out too, with buses replacing those services – so the roads are a bit packed at the moment.

As always, if there’s still floodwater, don’t drive into it. Some areas – such as Lismore on the North Coast – are still under evacuation orders. Keep an eye on the BOM website for updates.
