Laura Palmer’s Prophecy Is Fulfilled, Twin Peaks Is Returning After 25 Years

Time to get excited, everyone with two eyes and a heartbeat. We’re officially heading back to Washington state for some damn good coffee.

The much beloved, wholly surreal, and yet sadly short-lived series Twin Peaks is heading back to TV screens, fulfilling a prophecy set out in show’s original finale.
Show creator and general demented genius David Lynch confirmed that the murder-mystery is returning to screens thanks to US premium cable network Showtime. Lynch posted a simple video announcement at (US time) 11:30am – the precise time that series protagonist Agent Dale Cooper (a role filled by the effortlessly excellent Kyle MacLachlan) arrived in the sleepy town of Twin Peaks, to begin the investigation into the mysterious death of homecoming queen Laura Palmer.

Though on paper the revival might seem like something of a surprise, it seems like this has always been the plan since the show’s hastily concluded second – and final – season on original broadcaster ABC; the series’ original final episode featuring a sequence with Palmer appearing to Cooper to tell him she’d see him in 25 years.

From what we can gather so far, the new series will feature nine episodes and will hit the air in 2016 – exactly 25 years (hopefully to the day) after we last saw Laura Palmer, and set 25 years after the conclusion of the previous seasons. It’s not officially confirmed yet, but it looks as though Kyle MacLachlan will be stepping back into the role of Dale Cooper (if him tweeting about it is anything to go by).

As for the idea of Lynch being given the freedoms that cable TV allow creators these days, holy hell are we ever excited.

Through the darkness of future past,
The magician longs to see.
Once chants out between two worlds:
Fire, walk with me.
