Despite What David Lynch Said, Showtime Says ‘Twin Peaks’ Is Happening

Over the weekend, during a Q&A session in Brisbane to promote his ‘Between Two Worlds’ art exhibition, David Lynch had some greatly concerning things to say about the upcoming new season of Twin Peaks – specifically, that he’s “not sure” if it’s definitely going to go ahead, due to certain “complications.”
We were there and can confirm what he said, as well as the audible intake of breath from the Twin Peaks-loving crowd. Host David Stratton did not push him for further comment, and the session moved on to other topics, leaving a sense of dread not unlike the one that perpetually hung over the small Washington town.
It has since come to light, per a report in Indiewire, that money is likely what’s holding up negotiations between Lynch and cable network Showtime, who are bringing the series back. Though the filmmaker has been awarded full creative control of the series, he also wants a nice big slice of the sweet (cherry) pie that is DVD and streaming rights
Allaying fears somewhat, a source at Showtime has responded, saying that the show will go on. The source was quoted in Entertainment Weekly as saying:
“Nothing is going on that’s any more than any preproduction process with David Lynch … Everything is moving forward and everybody is crazy thrilled and excited.”
That’s a slightly weird way of putting that, but sure, we’ll take it.
The most likely assumption to make here is that this is all a big bluff on David Lynch’s part – the enigmatic director knows damn well just how we’re all anticipating the return of Twin Peaks, and dangling something like this in front of people is more than enough to rustle Showtime’s jimmies.
We are eagerly awaiting further updates.
