David Lynch Has Officially Walked Away From The Twin Peaks Reboot

Sports fans, I’ve got some bad news for you, and I’ve got some sort of good news for you.
The bad news is that the rumbling issues that revealed themselves in Brisbane last month have sadly proved true – David Lynch has officially walked away from the production of Twin Peaks‘ long awaited third season.
The sort-of good news is that this doesn’t necessarily mean the season as a whole is going to be put in the bin.
The director, creator, writer and general mastermind behind the series has removed himself from the production, citing issues with funding from the distributing network Showtime as the root cause.
Lynch had never actually signed on the dotted line to direct the series; a long and protracted contract negotiation process had been ongoing between him and the network, but ultimately the terms could not be agreed upon, leaving Lynch to announce earlier this morning that he’s out.
Lynch’s office sent a statement through to the Twin Peaks Festival staff, who in turn posted it on their Facebook page.
Dear Facebook Friends, David wanted me to pass along the following message:

Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks.

After one year and four months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was being offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.

This weekend I started to call the actors to let them know I would not be directing.

Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime.

I love the world of Twin Peaks, and wish things could have worked out differently.”

Whilst you’re dealing with the fact that your hearts just got ripped out of their chests, there is a small silver lining to this announcement.

Although Lynch will not direct the series – should it be produced – he and series co-creator Mark Frost have completed the scripts for all nine episodes of the planned third series. So if the production goes ahead, at the very least it will seemingly retain Lynch’s narrative vision for the season, if not his visual nous.

In the event that Twin Peaks season three does indeed come to fruition, expect to see it on screens mid-2016.
