Adelaide Just Got Blasted By Its Coldest Start To Winter Since World War II

Adelaide has garnered a well-deserved rep for being pretty fuckin’ hot when it wants to be. When summer reaches its full brutality, nary a resident in Australia’s most overlooked capital city dare leave their air-conditioned dens / whichever tiny Peel Street bar has the iciest fridge.

But today, of all days, may have just convinced the City of Churches to reconsider its position on 45°+ days.

The city shivered through a low of 2.9° this morning, equalling Adelaide’s coldest ever recorded start to winter. For context: the last time June 1 was that cold, thousands of the city’s residents were off fighting in World War II.

That frigidity was caused by a swell of cold and dry air from over the Southern Ocean, and clear-as-hell skies allowed things to get chillier. At time of writing, things are looking somewhat warmer, with a projected max of 16°.

Although Adelaide hasn’t had a nippier start to the season since 1943, the Bureau of Meteorology isn’t predicting the temperature to dip too far below 4° for the remainder of the week. The heat will max out at around 18°, with rain predicted for Monday.

After that, though, your best bet to escape the cold is probably to pack yourself into Red Square and hope for the best. Like you weren’t anyway.
