Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s office has confirmed today that an Australian man has been found stabbed to death on the streets of the Swedish city of Gothenburg.

The 30 year-old man’s name has not yet been released however Swedish police have said he was found near Odin’s Plaza in the city’s centre around 4.30am local time.

ABC is reporting that he was found badly wounded and was immediately taken to Sahlgrenska hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Local police chief Ben Wahlin has told Swedish newspaper Expressen that the investigation is ongoing, although the man has no known criminal history:

There is absolutely nothing in this person’s background which would indicate that something like this might happen.

Julie Bishop has released the following statement:

At this stage there is an investigation underway and so we won’t be going into any specific details. Likewise, the family are being informed. But I can confirm that the Australian government is providing consular assistance. I’m not in a position to give any more details at this stage because the family is still being informed.

We’ll update this story as more details are released.
