Sydney Shooter Wins NME Music Photography Award

Mikey Hart, a Sydney-via-London rock photographer and all-around legend has just won NME Magazine’s Music Photography Award for Reportage.

The competition, which attracts entries from both amateur and professional snappers around the world is a big-ass deal. It’s sponsored by Nikon and judged by NME Photo Director Marian Paterson, staff photographers Pennie Smith and Andy Willsher, Picture Editor Zoe Capstick and Deputy Editor Mike Williams. This year’s winning shots include a portrait of Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, The Subways performing live and album covers of The White Stripes.

Mikey’s shot of Washington (above), taken backstage at The ARIA Awards last year, edged him ahead and won him some sweet Nikon goods and an invite to the NME towers to meet their Picture Editor and one of their established photographers for a photography masterclass. Hart was actually a finalist in two categories, the second being Festival Photography, taken at Future Music. Last year he also made the finals with this shot of Jake Stone from Bluejuice.

“I moved to Australia 4 years ago”, says Mikey, “but I never took photos in the UK. I just started doing it when I got here, messing around and going to Spectrum and Oxford Art Factory. For me it’s about passion, it’s music before pay day. I have a day job, but this is what I love.” See? The best stuff comes straight from the Hart. (That Dad joke is ours.)
