Missy Elliott Brought Her OG Baby Dancer Out To Reprise Her ‘Work It’ Role At The VMAs

The MTV VMAs has been serving up pure fire performances all day, and if there was one that was going to snatch all the wigs in the room and mop the floor with them, it was going to be Missy Elliott.

Being honoured with the Video Vanguard Award for 2019 – essentially the VMAs Hall Of Fame – Missy ‘Misdemeanour’ Elliott powered through a career-spanning medley, sending me careening backwards in my chair and gasping with every costume change, track switch, and beat shift.

The moment that got me the hardest was the second that Alyson Stoner came out during ‘Work It‘ to reprise her role as the iconic young dancer from the video clip.

If you know, then you absolutely bloody know.

Alyson Stoner was that little lass that every young dancer back in 2003 wanted to be, myself included. We first watched her lay down some of the tightest, cutest choreography in the video clip for ‘Work It‘ with Missy Elliott, and probably caused a bunch of parents to give up their weekends taking their kids to hip hop classes.

Need a refresher on what she looked like back in ’03? Take a moment to revisit it then.

It’s been a whole 16 years since Alyson took up the role of Lead Kid Dancer – a spot which she nearly didn’t audition for – and god damn it was such a treasure to see her step back into the role to honour Missy Elliott’s work.

Peep Missy Elliott’s whole performance below because holy SHIT it is so good and it took every ounce of my being to not burst into tears at my desk.

Oh and BRB, buying myself a velour tracksuit ASAP.
