Macklemore’s ‘Same Love’ Hits #1 On Australian iTunes After Backlash

Excuse us for a second.

AHHHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAH HAHAHAH AHAHAHAHHAHAHA HAHAHAH HAHAHAHAHHA HAH HAHAHAHA HAHAHAH AHHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHHAHA HAHAHAHAH HAHAH HAHAHAHHH AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AH HA AH AH HA HA HA HAAAAAAA.

After the more bigoted factions of Australian society campaigned against it, Macklemore‘s marriage equality anthem ‘Same Love‘ has hit #1 on Australian iTunes.

It’s a spectacular backfire from supporters of the ‘no’ campaign, who have argued nonsensically that Macklemore should be banned from performing the song at the NRL Grand Final (which he will be, with singer May Lambert, whose beautiful voice you hear on the original track and who contributed to writing it).

Tony Abbott stomped his foot and proclaimed that sport and politics shouldn’t mix, despite a long and well-documented history of Abbott inserting his politics into sport (and pretty much every where else he can).

Peter Dutton went even further, making the truly insane argument that ‘free speech’ should mean two songs are played: one in favour of same-sex marriage, and one against.

Ladies and gentlemen, I hate to break it to you, but a former Prime Minister and a likely future Prime Minister don’t understand what ‘free speech’ means.

‘No ‘ campaigners even started a petition to have Macklemore banned from performing the song.

But thanks to these “angry old white dudes” having an absolute whinge, ‘Same Love’ has hit #1 on Australian iTunes. We gotta celebrate the wins, people, and in this case, the anti-marriage equality campaigners can go suck eggs.

As a side-note, we just wanted to share this beautiful comment from P.TV reader Mulliyan Williamson about why it’s so important this song be played during one of the biggest sporting events of the year (with permission, of course).

Honestly, there’s going to be tears in the audience, and it’s going to be goddamn beautiful.
