A Mobile Version Of ‘PUBG’ Is In Development But You’ll Probs Never Play It

The hugely popular online shooter, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is heading to mobile, but only in China. Well, for now, at least.

Chinese publisher, Tencent, announced that the mobile port is currently being developed in partnership with Bluehole and will be released in the country ahead of the official PC version, which will be amended to align with the country’s “socialist core values, Chinese traditional culture, and moral rules”.

There’s not a helluva lot of details going around at the moment, but Tencent reckon the mobile version will be largely similar to the PC variant in terms of gameplay, but adjusted for smaller screens and touch controls.

There’s no release date just yet or any information on whether it’ll be released beyond China, but good luck to the devs on this one. Don’t get me wrong, this is my favourite game of the year, but Bluehole still have a long way to go in terms of optimisation and stability, so it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out.

Given the wider reach of mobile as a gaming platform, it wouldn’t surprise me if the port makes an appearance worldwide. Mobile games are, on the whole, work better when controls are simplified, which poses the question; how much can you dumb down PUBG and still keep it fun?

Either way, we’ll just have to wait and see how it goes.
