After last year’s hilariously awkward/awkwardly hilarious turn as host of the Golden Globes, we expected a lot from Ricky Gervais by way of scathing take downs of Hollywood big wigs at the 2012 award ceremony. And so we have to admit we were slightly disappointed with the comparatively tame performance we witnessed today.
Whether it was by his own volition or the Hollywood Foreign Press had him on a short leash, the vitriol barometer was down considerably compared to last year – e.g. the best he had to throw at Madonna was a reference to the MTV Music Awards girl-on-girl bit with Britney – to which she totally got her own back with the quip: “I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years. On TV.”
In fact, Gervais’s overall screen time seemed fairly minimal? Ah well. Watch Ricky’s full opening monologue here:
