Ever since it was announced that Sex and the City would be copping a reboot without Kim Cattrall, the question of what to do with the absence of Samantha Jones has hung in the air like a bad pun. I couldn’t help but wonder… were they going to kill Sam?
No. It’s worse.
The producers have reportedly done Sam so dirty, you guys.
In the first interview about her absence in And Just Like That… (the official name for the SATC reboot), HBO Max’s chief content officer Casey Bloys had this to say: “Friendships fade.”
NOT ON SEX AND THE CITY THEY DON’T.
And Just Like That… is set in the present day, with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt (Kristen Davies) now in their 50s and dealing with life, love and COVID.
“They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s,” Bloys told TV Line.
“It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s.”
You couldn’t have made a reasonable excuse for Samantha not to be there? Running a publicly listed company from London, perhaps?
Friendships might fade in the real world, but Sex and the City is about these friendships. Others come and go, but these four were in it for the long haul. Who needs a husband when you have three sisters? THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE POINT.
The behind-the-scenes drama between Kim and SJP has supposedly been raging for years, with Kim’s unwillingness to return for a third SATC movie the main reason it never made it to air. Given the absolute trainwreck that was the second movie, you can hardly blame Kim for giving a third instalment a miss.
According to a 2008 book proposal that was never picked up, Kim Cattrall was such a natural comedian and scene-stealer that it made SJP, who was the show’s lead, a little jealous. Over time, a clique began to form, and Kim was left out in the cold.
