Apparently The ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Revival Was Halted ’Coz It Had A Sex / Cheating Storyline

Man, it’s been one helluva bumpy ride for the Disney+ Lizzie McGuire revival.

First, we were dealt the devastating news that filming of the series was put on hold as OG creator Terri Minsky exited her role as showrunner.

Then, Lizzie herself, Hilary Duff, revealed that the behind-the-scenes strife was ongoing as she pleaded with Disney to allow them to move the series to Hulu instead of watering down its content.

“Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains,” Duff wrote on Instagram. “However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with Lizzie who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

We now have intel about those first two eps that Disney deemed too adult-y for their liking.

The sneaky folks over at The Hollywood Reporter got their mitts on the script for the pilot ep, which reportedly included a storyline about sex and cheating.

Now, I’m not sure if said sex / cheating scandal involved returning character Gordo (who famously got with Lizzie at the end of the series after spending years in the friendzone), or if it’s an entirely new character.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Disney+ revealed in a statement last month that: “Our goal is to resume production and to tell an authentic story that connects to the millions who are emotionally invested in the character, and a new generation of viewers too.”

FREE LIZZIE MCGUIRE, DAMN IT.
