OH SHIT: The Cruelly Cancelled ‘Happy Endings’ Might Be Copping A Reboot

Anyone who ever watched the show during its original run will be unanimous in agreeing: Three seasons of Happy Endings wasn’t even remotely enough. The extremely good and hugely popular sitcom was cruelly shut down in its prime back in 2013 amid a raft of utterly insane scheduling decisions that cut the show’s potential audience out at the knees. But now, thanks to extremely vague but no less promising comments from the original network’s boss, there might still be hope yet. Happy Endings, brace yourself, might well be getting a reboot.

The yarn comes from a very intriguing comment made by ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke, implying that a revival of the show is in the “very early” stages of development.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Burke spoke following an on-stage appearance at the US Television Critic’s Association summer press tour; a rolling hot weather parade of TV heavyweights that annually produces the top quality juicy info.

This year has certainly been no exception, and with Burke dropping hints about Happy By-God Endings then it might well be time to get back on board the hype train.

Burke stated that the series could yet have new life under her leadership alongside the network’s new head of comedy Erin Wehrenberg.

I will never say never; I’m hearing whispers. That is a dream of a lot of people at ABC. I’m hearing that there’s a remote possibility of something. It’s at the very beginning [stages].

Happy Endings was certainly one of my favourite ABC shows. One of the things Erin and I bonded over when she came over [from Warner Bros. TV] to take over comedy development was a desire to do a show like Happy Endings, which led to a conversation about Happy Endings. So, I think she’s exploring what’s possible.

Yes. YES. YES THANKS.

There’s a few hurdles that need to be cleared before any potential revival of the series comes to be, naturally. Namely, series creator David Caspe recently parted ways with Sony Pictures Television (who owns the series and produced its entire original run) in favour of signing an overall deal with Universal Television. Burke, however, was openly optimistic that a deal could be struck that would see Caspe return to the series should a revival be given the green light.

It remains to be seen whether the original ensemble cast – consisting of Eliza CoupaElisha CuthbertZachary KnightonAdam PallyDamon Wayans Jr, and Casey Wilson – would jump back on board, but comments made at a cast and crew reunion three years ago suggested that “everyone would want to do it.” So take that for what it’s worth.

It might only be in the very, very early stages but we can confidently react to this whole shebang quite simply: Givvus.

Givvus it now.
