In her first TV interview since announcing her shock split from Purple Wiggle Lachlan Gillespie last month, Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins reveals that while their relationship “quite organically” came to an end, the news leaked to the media before they were ready for it to go public.
“The other Wiggles didn’t know. I don’t really think many people knew about it,” Watkins revealed on Australian Story. “Lachy and I still really wanted to work on our relationship, and work through some things together.”
Meanwhile Blue Wiggle Anthony Field revealed that the pair did a great job of concealing their issues and got on with business as usual.
“Emma and Lachy are really private,” says the 55-year-old. “They keep it to themselves, their private lives, and I never pry.”
Gillespie alleged that he was the more “romantic” of the two and that their career as entertainers was a major factor in the downward spiral of their relationship.
“We’re very different, Emma and I. I think I’m the more romantic one. She’s very much down the line and she just… She’s got her own way of doing things.” he revealed. “‘There’s not a lot of time in between to spend together outside Wiggles. It has all been all-consuming, and that’s been a tricky thing to get right, I suppose.”
Watkins goes on to slam the media’s portrayal of their relationship, insisting that while things have been “tumultuous”, they “genuinely care” for one another.
“The media does doubt our affection for each other, and they won’t write about that. But we genuinely care about each other and we have been through all of this together,” Watkins said. “Out of everybody, the only person that really gets me is Lachy.”
“This has been one of the strangest years and it has been tumultuous, but the truth is that Lachy and I love each other and we’ll be in each other’s lives for the rest of our life. And so I think that makes us feel quite calm.”
