While the first episode of The Bachelor Australia last night was A+ top quality television, there was one question playing on viewers minds: did the contestants know they were meeting Nick Cummins, AKA the Honey Badger, ahead of time?

Since Cummins is kind of a ~celeb~, I personally assumed that the contestants would have prior knowledge of what / who they were signing up for, a la the Sophie Monk season of The Bachelorette where all the blokes knew that they’d be walking up the red carpet in episode 1 to meet Sophie freakin’ Monk.
While some women, like Brooke, claimed they had zero idea who he was at all (despite walking up to him holding 400 footballs? I’m suss on you Brooke!), others were heard screeching things like “OH MY GOUUURD the Honey Badger!” and saying “Oooh I was hoping it might be him.”
(Of course, there was also Cass‘ horrific realisation that yes it was the Honey Badger and yes they’ve probably / definitely had sexual intercourse at least one (1) time before the show. AWKWARD.)
So why did some girls seem to be totally in the dark, while others seemed to have an inkling it might be Cummins as Bachie? Well, I did some research and someone “in the know” told me that in Sophie’s season there was a lot of deliberate noise about her joining the franchise so they decided to clue the boys in.
But with this season, producers kept Cummins secret and the women had no official prior knowledge before the show. However, before the show even went into pre-production was plenty of speculation that the next Bachie might be the Honey Badger, or Cam Cranley (from Georgia Love‘s Bachelorette season), or even Jarrod Woodgate before he went and found love with Keira Maguire. So when the girls made comments like “I thought it would be him”, they’re merely referring to said rumours.
So there you go. Maybe our dear sweet footy angel Brooke genuinely doesn’t have any fkn idea who Cummins is.
And if she does then just give her the Gold Logie now because what a performance.
