People Are Calling For Roy & HG To Take Over Commentary On ‘Ninja Warrior’

Australian Ninja Warrior‘ is a stone-cold hit in every sense of the word.

Not only did it bag a staggering 2.3million viewers for its debut episode on Sunday night (that’s around 10% of the entire country if you don’t mind), it backed that up last night by pulling in a similarly whopping 2.2million.
Those numbers make it the biggest TV debut of any show on Australian screens in over five freakin’ years. Huge.
The athletes running themselves through the course are all universally ripped units capable of unbelievable physical feats, and that’s got everyone practically glued to the screens.
There’s just one tiny little problem with the show thus far: the commentary.
Sure, Freddie Flintoff has a certain laddish charm to him that serves his role as a course-side shit-stirrer fairly well. But the play-by-play commentary from Ben Fordham and Rebecca Maddern is leaving something to be desired.
Not that either of them aren’t talented; far from it. But a pair of journos being suddenly thrust into the role of play-by-play commentary is a bit like asking a chimney sweep to suddenly start fixing air conditioners. Different worlds. Different skillsets.
Maybe they’ll learn the ropes by the time the first season winds to a close. Maybe they’ll find a knack for banter no one thought they had.
Or maybe, just maybe, the show needs something else. Something a little more tried and true. Something a little more dream-like in quality.
Maybe, the show needs Roy & H.G..
Practically since the first episode hit the airwaves, people on social media have been clamouring for the ‘This Sporting Life‘ legends to take over commentary duties, providing their quintessential touch and tongues to the outrageous proceedings.

That’s not so much a trickle of a call for “RampagingRoy Slaven and H.G. Nelson to take over as it is more an avalanche.

Think of the possibilities! The sheer amount of jokes to be made! The bevy of technical moves and transitions that are thus far dangling nameless!
As much as Channel Nine likes to promote their own, and Maddern and Fordham are very much Nine people, why not extend the glorious ‘Festival of the Boot‘ out to a full season of ‘Ninja Warrior‘?
You know it makes sense, Australia. Get behind it.
