It’s rare that you get invited to be a principal performer at the NFL‘s biggest music production of the year – the Halftime Show at the annual Super Bowl.
It’s even rarer that after that occurs, you have your huge global hit.
Bruno Mars took Super Bowl XLVIII to new heights with his halftime performance, teaming with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to put what was, at the time, the most watched Halftime Show in Super Bowl history.
A mere year or so later, and the NFL is apparently looking at going back to the well.
After Katy Perry‘s absolutely bloody spectacular performance in February – complete with White Tiger Zords and Left Sharks – the preparations for arguably the world’s biggest annual sporting event are well under way, with Super Bowl 50 set to take place on Monday, February 8th (Australian time) from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
With the global success of Mark Ronson and Mars’ smash hit “Uptown Funk,” the NFL has reportedly offered the gig to Mars. And not only would he serve as the show’s principal performer, he would also curate the event on the whole.
This would make Mars only the third repeat performer at the event – behind Gloria Estefan and, believe it or not, Nelly. Of those two, Estefan was the principle performer for both appearances, whilst Nelly guested on vocals for a performance of “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith, Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, and Mary J. Blige in 2001 (which is a fucking peak 2001 sentence), before performing “Hot in Herrre” during the 2004 Halftime show; a solid performance largely forgotten due to that *thing* that happened with Janet Jackson‘s left chesticle.
The NFL hasn’t confirmed the offer, but the move would make sense given Mars’ rise to global stardom since his last appearance.
Plus the last show? It weren’t bloody half bad at all.
