Sydney‘s weather today has really been a tale of extremes, as soaring temperatures in the morning and early afternoon gave way to a wave of ferocious severe thunderstorms, leaving a man dead and a woman severely injured.

The mercury peaked at around 1pm this afternoon, with Sydney Airport recording a temperature of a stifling 39.8 degrees. But at around 3:15pm, the weather turned – the air temperature dropping 10 degrees inside 5 minutes.
Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued by the Bureau of Meteorology as a line of storms swept over the city.

The wild winds, rain, and lightning proved for some spectacular viewing across the city; the storms leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The storms turned tragically violent, when a man was killed in Emu Plains after a tree fell on the car he was travelling in. The female driver of the vehicle was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
