Seven’s ‘Big Brother’ Reboot Might Not Even Be Filmed In An Actual House

We know that Big Brother is coming back in 2020. We know that Channel Seven is the network behind the reboot of the beloved – if not frequently reviled – reality TV series. We also know that casting for the new season is now open. But what you might be surprised to learn is that the show might not be returning to its original roots. Specifically, it might be moving on from its long-abandoned house on the Gold Coast into something entirely different altogether.

The latest development in the rapidly-evolving story of the Big Brother reboot is that not only is Channel Seven considering ditching the site of the OG Big Brother House altogether, but the new housemates might not be living in an actual house at all.

According to Rob McKnight, former Channel Ten executive producer and current editor of industry blog TV Insider, Seven is said to be looking at shifting the production away from Dreamworld to a studio in Melbourne somewhere, in a bid to keep costs on the otherwise-fairly expensive production down.

That would mean the complete and final abandonment of the original Big Brother site on the Gold Coast, and no potential rebuild or reconstruction of the original house that was virtually flattened by a deliberately lit fire back in June.

Speaking to Kyle & Jackie O on KIIS FM this morning, McKnight stated that “it doesn’t look like [Seven is] going to build an actual house this year, it will be a house within a studio to keep costs down.”

What form that winds up taking is obviously yet to be seen, but it’s deeply interesting to think that the network could be preparing to either lock a whole class of housemates in the bunker from Blast From The Past or, failing that, funnel them into a space in Melbourne and make them all deal with an outside space rendered virtually unusable by the bitter Victorian chill.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, obviously, but this could wind up being a very different-looking Big Brother than the one we’re all used to.
