‘Stranger Things’ Is Getting A ‘Pokémon GO’-Like Mobile Game In 2020

Off the top of me head, there’s Pokémon GO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and an in-the-works location-based Dragon Quest mobile game. Developers have found a winner and they’re rolling with it which makes this next bit hardly a surprise. Stranger Things will link up with Next Games studios to create a new location-based, free-to-play beauty.

If you’re keeping count here, this is the show’s third mobile game.

Per Polygon, the streaming company’s director of interactive games Chris Lee announced the news during their panel at E3. So what can you expect? Well, through location-based tech and Google Maps integration, you’ll be able to explore The Upside Down with your pals. (And fight off emerging evils.)

In line with the show’s aesthetic, animation will be in the style of an ’80s Saturday morning cartoon, Next Games revealed in a statement.

“We are huge fans of Stranger Things and thrilled to work together with Netflix to bring our shared vision of Stranger Things into life in a mobile game format,” Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen said. “Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things’ rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure, and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device.”

Stranger Things, the game, is currently slated for release in 2020 on iOS and Android. If that’s simply too far away for you then one of Netflix’s other Stranger Things game is due out on July 4.

Stranger Things 3: The Game has 12 playable characters to choose from, each with “unique mechanics and moves.”

For example, you’ll be able to use Eleven‘s psychic powers and there’s even a special upgrade called the ‘Thinking Cap’ that amplifies her strength so prepare for a lot of nosebleeds. Also, her special move is called ‘Nuke’, which sounds very badass.

Moving on!

Netflix says the game closely follows the events of the show but they also don’t want to spoil anything so here’s a spoiler-free, co-op sidequest with Mike and Dustin.

Um, top right?
