Sweet-toothed Google’s New Mobile OS Is Called ‘KitKat’

Have A Break. Have An Operating System.

Google
has long held the tradition of nicknaming their progressive Android mobile operating system updates after desserts – so far they’ve had Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, and many pundits guessed that Key Lime Pie was next (following their alphabetical order rule). So the announcement that the company had teamed up with sweetmaker Nestle to name their newest OS 4.4 update KitKat (yes, after the chocolate bar, but without the space between the two words) came as a pretty big surprise, and even has some people suggesting that tech product branding may be the future of corporate sponsorship.

The promotion crosses both ways, with new Kit Kat packaging to feature the Android robot logo munching on one of the popular chocolate bars, and the company will launch a competition to win tablet devices and Google Play credits. Kit Kat has posted a promo video online, which presents the chockie in the sort of dreamy, glossy, life-affirming way that high-end consumer electronics often are. The video offers “confectionery perfectionery” Kit Kat 4.4, which can be eaten landscape or portrait, and comes in “two megabites, four megabites, or a chunkybite option.”

An Apple a day may keep the doctor away, but we’re not sure what your healthcare professional would say about keeping a KitKat in your pocket at all times.
