Kelly Slater Narrows The Gap on Parko and Fanning

Kelly Slater has claimed his 50th ASP World Tour win by defeating Joel Parkinson at the Hurley Pro event at Trestles, California. It’s and ominous warning from the King Of Cowabunga as he moves into third place over all behind Parko and Mick Fanning. Slater was well aware of the importance of a victory in terms of overall standing.

I knew that heat would either make or break me for the year. I would have let Parko (Joel Parkinson) have those extra 2,000 points if he’d won and it would look very different on the ratings. It’s nice heading into Europe.

I feel like I’ve had so many good years at Lowers (Trestles). It’s cool to win the 50th here. I won my first event as a pro here and it’s great to get this win.

With 11 world titles, Slater has a knack for coming good at the right end of the tour. The next event will be the Quiksilver Pro in south-west France from September 28.
