Kelly Slater Defeats Joel Parkinson at the Quicksilver Pro

Kelly Slater hasn’t taken long to exact his revenge on 2012 ASP World Champ Joel Parkinson, pipping the Aussie at his home break in an epic final. With event organisers rolling the dice on the last day of competition and moving the event from Snapper Rocks to the famed Kirra Point, fans were treated to a white-knuckle barrel fest with Slater and Parkinson scoring 10 point rides on their way to the final.

For Slater, it’s his 52nd tour win and the perfect start to his 2013 campaign. At 42, Slater is chasing his 12th title. Seriously dude…

It was just fun today,” Slater said. “I really wanted to surf Kirra as I
made known the other day and it was great fun out there. We thought the
swell was going to be too East, but it’s really really good out there
and to get to surf it with Joel (Parkinson) is even better. He’s one of
the best and we had a lot of fun out there
.”

Earlier in the day Parkinson defeated French Polynesian Michel Bourez, while Slater pulled latter heat 10 to steal a showstopping semi from Mick Fanning.

Despite having victory snatched away, Fanning was his usual chilled, philosophical self. “It’s a tough way to go out but you can’t be too upset when you put
together a heat like that,
” Fanning said. “I had a really good start and
put in some solid scores. Kelly (Slater) just did his ‘Kelly Thing’ and
got that incredible 10 and really put himself back in the hunt. Shame I
couldn’t get to the Final with Joel (Parkinson), but it’s a good start
to the year so I’ll refocus and get ready for Bell
s.”
