Yesterday, a woman in Perth by the name of Chantelle lost her Melbourne Cup winnings after she posted a selfie with the ticket to Facebook, and a ‘friend’ swiped the barcode and claimed her $825 in winnings as his own.
And today, it has emerged that the EXACT SAME THING happened to her mate Sam Smith (unfortch not the singer), who also won $825 on Prince of Penzance, and also got his winnings fleeced after he also posted a photo of the ticket to Facebook.
Here’s a theory: either Chantelle and Sam are the unluckiest people in Australia, or they’ve got a mutual Facebook friend who’s an absolute c-unit.
Speaking to Radio 6PR this morning, Sam said:
“Chantelle posted a photo on Facebook and I posted just a photo of the ticket on Facebook itself. I didn’t have it up for long before because one of my friends messaged me and said you need to take that down straight away someone will steal your money.”
“I didn’t think it was a thing but I took it down anyway. By the time I went to claim the ticket it was gone. We were already celebrating and had bought four bottles of champagne.”
“It’s really disappointing to think that one of our friends could’ve have [cheated] us out of our money. Maybe they did it for a joke or the situation has become so desperate they now can’t admit it.”
Let this be a lesson to all of Australia to NOT PUT YOUR TICKETS ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
OR BOARDING PASSES.
OR CREDIT CARDS.
OR ANYTHING REALLY. GO OUTSIDE, IT’S PRETTY NICE I HEAR.
