Another AFL Footballer Charged With Assault

Another AFL player has been charged with assault-related offences following a brawl in a Melbourne nightclub. 20 year-old Toby Greene, who plays for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, was arrested on Tuesday following the incident at a nightclub in Caulfield.

Following the incident, in which it is alleged that Greene and a teenaged friend assaulted a nightclub staff member, police have charged him with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing injury, affray, assault in company, assault by kicking, assault with a weapon, unlawful assault, making threats to inflict serious injury, drunk in a public place and criminal damage.
Greene’s associate, a 19 year-old East Malvern man, was charged with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, affray, assault in company, assault by kicking, unlawful assault, making threats to inflict serious injury, drunk in a public place and behaving in an offensive manner.
This is the third assault-related case to arise within the AFL in the past three months. Collingwood player Marley Williams received a 12 month suspended jail sentence in April for grievous bodily harm, while West Coast Eagles player Murray Newman is currently serving a one year jail term that commenced in early March, also for grievous bodily harm.
Both Toby Greene and his co-accused have been bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in September.
Greene’s GWS Giants currently sit in 16th place on the AFL Ladder, with 2 wins from 8 games.
