It feels harmless enough, scrolling through Instagram and liking pictures of adorable dogs – but does everybody win?
Sketch comedy group and deadly, serious journalistic enterprise Collective Noun have done some hard-hitting fact-finding into the effects on the self-esteem of regular dogs that glamourising the cute ones has:
“The problem with these Instagram photos is they don’t accurately represent what real dogs look like, and unfortunately canines across the country feel a lot of pressure to live up to this impossible level of cuteness.”
They report that some dogs have become too shy to be soon without a filter, they even interview one lonely dog owner who has been forced to go to the dog park by himself.
We have to remember, as they conclude, all pups are beautiful:
