Police Break Up Sydney CBD Brawl As Comic Book-Clad Revellers Punch On

A 28-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, after two groups of people, one of them dressed in comic book outfits, engaged in a brawl in the Sydney CBD overnight.

Officers from the Sydney City Local Area Command say that they were called to a hotel on King Street at around 1.55am today, following reports of a fight.

It is alleged that a man was ejected from the hotel, and a short time later, became involved in an argument with two other men, one of whom was knocked unconscious.

Security from the venue intervened and assisted the unconscious man, aged 24, before police and emergency services arrived on the scene.

The two injured men were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment, while the 28-year-old was placed under arrest and taken to Day Street Police Station.

In addition to assault, the man faces charges of resisting or hindering a police officer in the execution of duty. He has been bailed and will appear in court on October 11.

Video of the scene shows the aftermath of the brawl, as revellers dressed in pop culture-themed outfits including a Power Ranger and Harley Quinn stand amongst police officers.

Oz Comic Con is taking place in Sydney this Saturday and Sunday and it has been reported elsewhere that the costumed revellers had been attending the event.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.

Earlier this year, a couple at a Melbourne swingers party were shot by police while dressed as The Joker and Harley Quinn, after concerns were raised about a toy gun that he wore as part of his costume. The couple are now seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages from Victoria Police.
