Secret Agent Man Edward Snowden Has Been Nominated For the Nobel Peace Prize

Two Norwegian parliamentarian bros, called Snorre Valen and Bård Vegar Solhjell, have nominated American Edward Snowden for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. The award would jointly go to him and his sticky fingers for their work towards the betterment of planet Earth.

They said in a joint statement (best friends statement), “There is no doubt that the actions of Edward Snowden may have damaged the security interests of several nations in the short term. We are, however, convinced that the public debate and change in policy that have followed in the wake of Snowden’s whistle blowing has contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order.”

Usually the nominations for the prize are not released for 50 years, but anyone who puts forward a nomination is free to circulate the information themselves #humblebrag.

When asked whether the pair were scared of incurring the wrath of the Americas, Valen replied in an email today saying, “The U.S. is one of the world’s most democratic and free societies. I feel confident that a peace prize to Snowden will not affect US-Norwegian relations. I have more trust in Barack Obama’s democratic thinking than that of China’s.”

Last year The Nobel Committee received a record 259 nominations for the prestigious prize was award , which was eventually granted to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The decision on who to award ultimately rests with the Norwegian Nobel Committee but other people eligible to put forward nominations include: Members of national assemblies and governments and members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, University professors of history, social sciences, philosophy, law, and theology, university presidents, and directors of peace research and international affairs institutes, and former recipients, including board members of organizations that have previously received the prize. So, if that is you, best get your nominations in quick; the 2014 prize will be awarded on the 10th of December.
